Purpose of assignment
The Senior Communications Advisor is responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies to advance public health goals. She/he will support advocacy, programming, and partnership development work in the DRC and Senegal, as well as for countries in West and Central Africa where PATH has interventions. She/he will be supervised by the Senegal Country Director but will also report to the DRC Country Director and the Senior Partnership Development Officer (PATH EU PD). She/he will work closely with the External Affairs and Africa Region teams to advance PATH’s Advocacy, Communications and Engagement (ACE) strategy.
Responsibilities
- Envision and execute communications activities in support of PATH’s programmatic, advocacy and partnership development goals in the DRC and Senegal across a vast portfolio of projects in Malaria, Immunization, Digital Health, Urban Health, Neglected Diseases and Emergency response and preparedness.
- Proactively identify opportunities, priority events and platforms to reach target audiences with key messages in the West and Central Africa countries, in close collaboration with EU PD team – including participation in the Central and West-Africa’s PD Strategy workshop and development a matching communications plan and support its implementation.
- Assist in planning and implementing effective public events and meetings to convene decision makers and influencers.
- Develop and produce compelling written and multimedia content to showcase PATH’s experience, expertise, evidence, and impact, from concept to completion through research, writing, editing, and proofreading content to reach key stakeholder audiences — e.g., brochures and fact sheets in French and English, policy briefs, blogs, op-eds, presentations, web copy, and op-eds – in line with the ACE and the regional partnerships’ strategy\ies.
- Conceptualize, develop, and implement national media outreach strategies for major milestones and campaigns.
- Strengthen communications capacities and skills within the West and Central Africa regions for more effective engagement with funders, policymakers, media, and influencers to achieve business and public health objectives.
- Assist in selecting and managing the work and budgets of communications firms, contractors, and vendors in support of PATH’s communications, PD, and advocacy efforts.
- Assist in developing, strengthening, and supporting PATH’s relationships with key Ministries of Health and other agencies, civil society partners, and multilateral organizations, particularly when it comes to coordinating on communications activities.
Required Experience
- Master’s degree in communications, media relations, journalism, or related field
- A minimum of five years of experience in communications, partnership development, advocacy, and media relations and/or a combination of work and education experience.
- Experience in health and familiarity with immunization, infectious diseases or MNCH in the Africa context.
- Demonstrated ability to translate highly technical information for effective communication to a wide range of audiences.
- Demonstrated experience in developing messages and communications activities to influence decision makers.
- Demonstrated experience in engaging media both at national and provincial level.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and French.
- Self-starter, proactive and positive with a solutions-oriented attitude and works with minimal supervision.
- Deadline driven, ability to juggle multiple priorities and deliver them on time.
- Expertise in computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Must have legal authorization to work in Senegal.
