Tostan is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Dakar, Senegal, currently operating in five West African countries. At the strategic level, the organization is committed to continuing to develop its core competency of empowering education, and to document and scale the sustainable impact it creates on a range of issues. Tostan’s flagship model, the three-year Community Capacity Building Programme (CCBP), has already reached thousands of communities in West and East Africa since 1991. Results in governance, education, health, economic empowerment and the environment are currently being monitored, and Tostan is particularly proud to have played an important role in the large-scale empowerment of women and girls and in community abandonment of harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage. As part of its strategic engagement plan 2023-2030, Tostan focuses on strategic scaling. The organization is developing new implementation strategies to support community leadership by unlocking broader systemic changes at the regional level. It also creates new models for sharing and replicating its programs with other development partners and expands its capacity to share Tostan’s global approach to support and influence a range of local and global audiences. Department overview

Tostan shares the fundamental principles and key aspects of its program model with civil society organizations (CSOs) and CSO platforms, religious leaders and their networks, government representatives, academics, donors, and other development partners. It implements various training offerings at the Tostan Training Center (TTC) in Thies, Senegal and in the countries of origin of the development partners, and facilitates a Community of Practice, a virtual space for TTC alumni to continuously learn and exchange.

Roles and responsibilities

Under the Supervision of the Senior Program Manager (Training focal point), The Programming and training specialist will assist the Tostan Program Team in the preparation, revision, and editing of guides and other program-related documents for use in all aspects of Tostan program implementation. SHe/He will also train Tostan staff and other NGO partners.

• Assists in the preparation, revision, and editing of training materials and guides and other Tostan program-related documents;
• Provides support to organization and implementation of tasks related to Tostan’s programs (TTC training seminars, review of the Community Empowerment Program, Reinforcement of Parenting Practices, Peace and Security, etc.);
• Contribute to the drafting of reports to partners and donors;
• Assists in internal and external communication for the TTC and other educational programs

This list is not exhaustive, the Programming and training specialist will be called upon to perform any other duties that may be assigned to him/her in connection with her/his skills or position.

Key qualifications required:

Education:

• Degree in social sciences, education or more than 4 years’ experience in the field of training/facilitation or other related field;
• Diploma or in-depth experience in the field of writing and editing in English and French

Language skills:

• Oral and written fluency in French is required;
• Oral and written fluency in English is required;
• Wolof is desirable.

Knowledge and Experience:

• Minimum of 4 years’ professional experience in a Training Center or program, NGO, International Organization or Social Enterprise in Senegal or Africa;
• Experience working in international as well as rural environments;
• Knowledge and interest in community-led development, non formal education and human rights
• Expert knowledge – Google Suites tools (Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Excel) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint);
• Excellent translation, writing, research and editing skills in English and French;
• Experience in seminar facilitation and training;
• Good command of computer programs.

• Enjoy working within a small NGO environment that is mission-driven;
• Ability to work well in multicultural teams;
• Willingness and ability to learn and acquire new skills over time;
• Good sense of humor.
