The Managing Director, Safeguarding is a mission critical leadership role that has overall accountability for ensuring Save the Children US (SCUS) meets its safeguarding obligations to children and adults served by agency programs.The role is responsible for:
– Leading a team that manages Agency systems and processes relating to the safety of children and adults served by the Agency’s domestic (U.S.) programming, including training, reporting, investigation and case management.
– Being the primary point of contact for the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, and Board on matters relating to child and adult safeguarding.
– The proactive identification and mitigation of risks related to child and adult safeguarding.
– Embedding child and adult safeguarding best practices in our workforce, and the design and delivery of programs.
– Ensuring SCUS’s policies and procedures align with the Save the Children Global Child Safeguarding Protocol, and contributing to the further development of Save the Children movement standards and practices related to safeguarding.What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
Program Leadership and Development: (20%)
• Develop and oversee a framework for addressing risks to the safeguarding of children and adults served by SCUS programs, in coordination with agency leadership and other Divisions.
• Provide subject-matter expertise and leadership for organization-wide action plans to enhance child and adult safeguarding practice based upon internal and external audit findings or other assessments.
• Report child and adult safeguarding-related incidents, trends, and action plans to the Senior Leadership Team and the Board of Trustees, as appropriate.
• Present to and influence multiple staff constituencies, at all seniority levels including Senior Leadership Team, on child and adult safety best practice, requirements and processes.
• Train, develop, coach, lead, and supervise staff, clearly communicating organization, division and department priorities, and how their work contributes to our mission, ensuring that the working environment continually fosters diversity, inclusion, and belonging – supporting Save the Children values.Prevention: (20%)
• Review and update the Child Safeguarding Policy and Procedures.
• Identify, assess, and monitor safeguarding risk areas across the organization, and work collaboratively across Divisions to implement risk mitigation and management processes.
• Manage the review, update, and operationalization of a risk management framework for child and adult safeguarding.
• Oversee the development and delivery of safeguarding-related training for all staff, volunteers, focal points, partner, and other relevant contacts of the Agency.Reporting: (20%)
• Accountable for ensuring that all child and adult safeguarding incidents or near misses arising from SCUS’s domestic and international programs are reported in accordance with the applicable policies and procedures. Provide overall management and support in relation to child safety incident reports in Save the Children US, Save the Children Head Start, and Save the Children Action Network and liaises with the Safeguarding Trustee as appropriate.
• Proactively manage reporting on serious incidents, reporting metrics, emerging risks and trend analysis providing reporting to Senior Leadership Team and Board as required.
• In coordination with other Divisions, manage reporting of child and adult safeguarding matters to external agencies, consistent with donor requirements and applicable laws.
• Lead SCUS reporting, interaction and influencing with US Government and major donors on all child and adult safeguarding reporting matters.
• Aligned with the organization’s Code of Ethics and commitment to reporting, lead a team that serves as a resource to all staff to answer questions on reporting requirements and procedures.Response & Case Management Leadership (20%)
• Manage, and support the Safeguarding team to conduct safeguarding investigations in an appropriate, timely, and survivor-centered way.
• Investigate (or coordinate with an external investigator) serious incidents.
• In coordination with other Divisions, communicate with relevant federal/state/local child services agencies and law enforcement authorities as required.
• Ensure that the Agency case management system for incident reporting and investigations is updated and maintained.
• Manage the review child safeguarding critical incidents to identify lessons learned and strengthen existing processes.Systems: (20%)
• Ensure all Agency systems and processes relating to child and adult safeguarding are comprehensive and working effectively, including systems relating to domestic programming site visits, partner assessments, safe programming and non-programming events.
• Support the Agency process for background checks for employees, consultants and program visitors.
• Keep updated on industry developments to ensure Agency systems are current and responsive to relevant risks.Required Qualifications
• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, plus at least 10 years of relevant experience
• Demonstrated experience managing a team, preferably engaging in safeguarding-related casework.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience of safeguarding in varied settings, preferably with experience of working in differing legal jurisdictions.
• Proven professional experience with a focus on child safety, conducting investigations into child abuse and/or neglect, and case management.
• Deep understanding of child safeguarding principles and approaches.
• Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
• Professional proficiency in spoken and written English
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering and maintaining and environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.Preferred Qualifications
• Professional experience with incident management software and/or databases.
• Experience working in an organization with international operations.
• A current driver’s license.Compensation
Save the Children is offering the following salary ranges for this position, dependent on candidate location:
• Geo 1 – NY Metro, DC, and other locations with labor costs significantly above national average: Target Salary for this position is $131,750 – $147,250 base salary
• Geo 2 – Locations around the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $119,850 – $133,950 base salary
• Geo 3 – Locations significantly below the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $107,950 – $120,650 base salary
