GENERAL CONTEXT
Médecins Sans Frontières is an international independent medical-humanitarian organization, which offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE
Coordination and supervision of the malaria operational research proposal conducted within the Mission, through collaboration with key investigators and institutions involved in the research project.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow up & implement the malaria OR already agreed upon, and potentially others related to the topic.
  • Develop/participate in the research proposals and submit for ethics committee approval in close coordination with Key investigators and institutions involved in each research.
  • Supervises the implementation and outcome of the research in collaboration with the study stakeholders.
  • Coordinates with mission, project and MoH the implementation of the preventive malaria activities integrated into the routine activities of the malaria and EPI programs.
  • Collaborate with the creation and implementation of all necessary instruments for the data collection related to OR (e.g., paper forms, databases, write SOPs, organize flux of information) in close coordination with Key investigators and institutions involved in each research.
  • Coordinates the elaboration of health promotion and education material for malaria preventive interventions if necessary.
  • Elaborates training material for health care workers (different levels from DMC to health facilities) and ensures adequate capacity building is in place for the implementation of malaria preventive activities.
  • In collaboration with the epidemiologist in the mission ensure the collection of high quality data (implement appropriate data quality assurance tools, conduct regular data checks and resolve any data problems in the circuit stablished for the OR or the development of the malaria preventive activities).
  • Represents MSF internally and externally, especially at local, regional and national levels, in all aspects related to OR in collaboration with mission, cell, and medical departemnt.
  • Produces regular progress reports as feedback for the project, mission coordination, OCBA Headquarters, and collaborating study stakeholders.
  • Supports the writing up of scientific papers for external peer reviewed publications on progress and outcome of the research.
  • Supervise the field research staff.

SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES (linked to the context)

  • Ensure adequate implementation of Perennial Malaria Chemoprevention (PMC), increasing target age up to 24 months, and support in its decentralisation.
  • Ensure adequate implementation of malaria vaccination within the routine EPI activities, including catch-up, in the hospital and in the designated health facilities.
  • Follow up other malaria activities including vector control, case management, decentralised care as well as monitoring and surveillance the trends in the project.
  • Ensure adequate health promotion and community engagement activities are in place to support malaria preventive interventions, as well as research activities.
  • Ensure adherence to OR protocol, SOPs, and correct documentation of activities and both research and programmatic record keeping documents.
  • Problem solving and regular communication with coordination and relevant HQ advisors to provide updates, state challenges and implemented solutions.
  • Partial planned presence in the field to ensure proper progress in the stages of the OR and adherence to protocols/SOP as well as detection of challenges.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Medical degree.
  • MSc degree in Public Health or Epidemiology or related field.
  • Research experience in the field of malaria required.
  • Previous clinical and programmatic experience in MSF humanitarian settings, in malaria endemic areas and particularly with malaria preventive interventions.
  • Previous experience in vaccination program will be an added value.
  • Languages: French and English fluent.
  • Knowledge of general epidemiological concepts and methods.
  • Knowledge of malaria epidemiology, prevention, clinical course, and management.

CONDITIONS

  • Position based in any MSF OCBA Hub (Barcelona, MSF-Spain office delegations, Amman, Bogota, Dakar or Nairobi). Final location will be subject to the employability of the preselected candidate (residency, work permit, etc.).
  • Regular visit to the field 40%-45 (TBC).
  • Duration: temporary contract of 1 year.
  • Full time job.
  • Annual gross salary: HQ 4A level+ Secondary Benefits based on MSF-OCBA Reward Policy. Subjected to local conditions.
  • Starting date: as soon as possible.
